PS2 "disk read error"?

Well I have a PS2 that I got since maybe 2002 I think. Around when they first came out and ever since I never had any problems with it. The PS2 CDs work good, the black backs, blue backs, and there's a churning grinding noise when its a purple back but it still works and I only ever tried one. I got a new black back ps1 game but it won't read it and does the same grinding noise but all the other games work. I'm wondering if this is a problem with the system or the game?
