Hair isn't healthy but never used heat?

My hair is thick and coarse. Doesn't look or feel like regular hair. I don't use heat or anything, straight wash it or wet it to get it managed. But it doesn't fall back into place how hair should. It's hair that I constantly have to make sure doesn't look too bad because it stays like that. It feels like strands of hay to be honest. This bothers me.
